![]() ![]() The+Question:+Dictator?++ A little less clear is the role of The Question he's never addressed by name, but it's implied that he's a powerful ruler of some kind. Here, we see Judas begging for his life, asking that the council of the Rock of Eternity forgive him his sins "as He would." To seal the deal, Johns has the wizard burden Judas with silver coins around his neck, referencing the commonly accepted notion that Judas betrayed Jesus for the kindly sum of 30 silver pieces. In The New 52 #1, we get a decidedly definitive origin for the character which ultimately renders him less a "stranger" and more "one of the most famous dudes in history." The issue implies that Phantom Stranger is in fact Judas Iscariot, the man who betrayed Jesus to the Romans. ![]() Phantom+Stranger's+Biblical+Origins++ We saw the Phantom Stranger show up in Justice League #6's back-up tale, but as usual, he was shrouded in mystery – the character never had a solid origin in the old DC continuity. I'd bet that we should watch the Shazam back-up alongside the main Justice League story, particularly with how much Steve Trevor plays a role in that series as well as this issue. Geoff Johns clearly has got some plans for the magical realm – which somehow revolves around Pandora – but they remain obscured at best. It's important to note that Pandora's opening monologue states that the "council" members of the Rock of Eternity were not appointed by anyone they were the first magic users in the world and thus took on the position for themselves. While we've slowly been getting introduced to the magic of the New 52 in things like Demon Knights, Justice League Dark and the Shazam back-up in Justice League, it really wasn't until the opening pages of The New 52 #1 that we saw its true scope, including the Rock of Eternity. It's entirely possible there are more that I missed, so please sound off in the comments below! Magic+is+Back,+Jack++ If there was a central focus to the DC relaunch, it certainly wasn't the mystical side of the DCU. I went ahead and combed through the issue carefully to point out anything of interest. Though we get a little more insight into Pandora's character, what this FCBD issue really did was tease a whole mess of things to come from DC in the next year, as well as introduce some characters, artifacts, and elements that we weren't aware of existing yet. ![]()
